Our ledger—documenting the details of every monetary transaction, coming and going—is always accessible to all Members.
Because we are not a business or nonprofit organization, it’s not possible for us to set up a bank account for DT4T.
Some members have restrictions on how much income can be associated with our accounts, such as those with SSI. That’s why we rely on Members with greater financial privilege to carry the weight when it comes to holding DT4T funds.
The Central Fund is made up of Membership Dues, revenue from Events and Gatherings, and donations.
At the end of each quarter, 5% of the Central Fund is set aside for our Safety Fund. The rest of the Central Fund is divided proportionally among all the Stewards, based on the effort (or “Spoons”) they put towards DT4T that quarter.
Having this fund also allows us the flexibility to loan Hosts money for upfront costs associated with their Events, Gatherings, and Emergency Direct Actions.
Fiscal Sponsorship allows community organizations like ours to become eligible for grants that only fund 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations. The fiscal sponsor essentially absorbs the sponsored organization into its own programming and acts as a fiscal and legal intermediary between the sponsored organization and the IRS and grantmakers.
The fiscal sponsor would solve all the problems that come up with relying on Members’ personal bank accounts by holding the money for us instead. Plus, they’d make us eligible to apply for a lot of grant money, changing the game for how DT4T could support its Members!
The decision to pursue Fiscal Sponsorship will not be taken lightly and will be explored transparently. Any Fiscal Sponsor we consider must be aligned with our Core Values & Beliefs and must have the same, transparent approach to finances as we do.
