DisabiliT4T is a non-hierarchical, leaderless collective.
Without hierarchical leadership, we'll make decisions as a collective, by deferring to those who will be most affected by the outcome of a given decision. For example, if we’re deciding on an amendment to our Community Blueprints to improve safety for Black Members, non-Black Members’ opinions would be considered irrelevant. Decisions will be discussed and reached at Quarterly Forums, which will be open to all Members.
We believe that, contrary to a traditional leadership model, the decision-makers and the do-ers don’t need to be the same people. After decisions are reached by those most affected by the outcome, they'll be set in motion by those with the resources to perform the labor. At DT4T, we call these members, "Stewards." Stewards are modestly compensated based on a system that measures effort rather than hours or output, ensuring that those who are more disabled are compensated fairly for their contributions.
With no leadership handing down decisions about programming, the power will be in the hands of our Members to create the social spaces they need. Once we launch, any Member will be empowered to host accessible Events and Gatherings, virtually or in person, using DT4T's administrative resources. Events may include educational workshops, dance parties, craft markets, drag shows, outdoor adventures, peer support groups, ASL practice hours, and anything else our Members dream up!
The way we'll operate as a non-hierarchical, leaderless group is laid out in our Community Blueprints, which are a complete framework for the intentional community we're building. They include things like detailed conflict resolution plans, guidance on whose voices should be centered in a given decision-making process, details on our vetting procedures, and plans for racial and cultural safety. It's important to us that we know how we're going to keep our Members safe before we officially launch this fall. The complete Blueprints are on our website at disabilit4t.org/blueprints.
